DLP Pico Projector Kit – Make your own gadget?

There has been a lot of talk recently about Texas Instruments pico projector’s, which led us to Texas-instruments website (ti.com) where we found this. Texas instruments sell a DLP pico projector development kit that is designed to be implemented within other systems. I never expected to see such a kit available in such a way, but its refreshing to see. Thier pico technology is embedded within lots of pico projector’s you can purchase today around the world, they provide the most high technology part, the mirror based DLP system which produces the actual image you see projected onto the wall (or other surface.) They explain it as:

“Projection technology is not new, but with the new Development Kit for the DLP Pico Projector, you can integrate projection into devices previously deemed impossible.

The DLP Pico chipset is a miniaturized version of the popular DLP Chip found in today’s best projectors on the market. Using microscopic mirrors, the DLP Pico Chip reflects light to project a sharp, clear and colorful image on practically any surface.

Combining the image quality of DLP technology with a miniaturized form factor allows you to integrate high-quality projection into practically any device. The applications are nearly endless.”

We Love Texas Instruments! – by opening up the access to the tools it democratises them!

Even as I read this I can think of dozens of ideas where this could be put to good use, hobbiests everywhere could include animated, progressive video projection into anything. Whats more the costs are relatively small. Essentially a pico projector module the Texas Instruments DLP development kit gives you hgva video projection from a box measuring only 44.8 x 67.4 x 14.2 mm. The scope of including pico projectors in all sorts of models, homes systems, vehicles and more is tremendous – TI themselves point this out:

The DLP® Pico™ Projector Kit is a fully integrated projection solution that can be quickly and easily integrated into new consumer, industrial and medical products.

What gadget would you add a pico projector too? and by you it literally could be you! TI promote the connection of the Beagle Board with this dlp pico dev kit, the beagle board is a development circuit board that offers all the functionality of a regular computer from a single, small and easily implemented circuitboard. It’s fan-less, usb enabled and can use the dlp dev kit to output its video, potentially using the beagleboard + texas instruments pico projector development kit together could give you a small, projector displayed computer in a box the size of an average reading book! Could this be the new age of hobbycrafting? It all seems very high tech when hobbyists can implement projectors the size of a phone within their projects, but it wont be long before this tech gadget development dream is seen more in the public. What would you build?
