New Samsung Pico Projector – CES 2010

Another pico that popped up its small little gadget head at CES 2010 was the new Samsung pico projector. The last samsung pico – the samsung mbp200 seems almost like a distant memory now, being one of the first pico projectors to hit the mainstream around the time of the original 3M microprojector the Mpro110. Since then 3M has launched two new pico projectors all the way to market, but is the new Samsung pico projector a killer gadget? or just another pico-projector late to the party?

We havent seen a codename or a model name for the new samsung pico yet but there are a fair number of photo’s from CES 2010 showing it off. White plastic with a somewhat applesque appearence it seems to be a world apart from the first samsung picoprojector. Further distinguishing itself in a hastily growing gadget world of handheld projector’s is the shape – its a square box, quite literally. The standard format for most of the current pocket-projector’s at market is to stick with the oblong mobilephone like shape, a shape which seems to work well with the inner workings of tiny-projection engines, but this new samsung is different, and we like it!

Samsung are keeping their cards to their chest on this one, but the pico-spec’s that we do know are impressive. 30 Lumens from a small square box is quite impressive and roughly 3 times that of the average massmarket picoprojector, a small coloured graphic on the side of the samsung-2010-pico also shows us that its LED based – to get such good lumenance out of LED’s means Samsung must have developed their projection-driver quite a lot since their first pico. No uk release date has been stated, although we expect to hear more by the end of January and have heard rumours of a Q2 2010 launch.

We love the new design for this all white square handheld pico and we are glad to see the big name brands pushing forward their technology and putting money into reseach and development for the handheld projector, no doubt within the coming years Samsung will continue to push forward with projection-units and perhaps embed more pico projector’s within their consumer electronics!
