Show WX Pico Underground – city pico projector – urban video graffiti Pt1

As in our last post, a review of the Royaltek RPJ2000 we are now going to have a look at the MicroVisions ShowWX in action, namely at a string of videos added to youtube over 2009, tagged as picounderground and originally put at picoUnderground.com these videos show experiments in the use of the microvision laser pico, often walking around town using the pico projector wirelessly and taking advantage of the microvision show wx’s auto focusing because its a laser pico. Switching a video image around multiple surfaces quickly without the need to refocus makes the pico perfect for city urban video graffiti. Theres 20 or so visual experiments using this micro projector all around town so we will split them over several posts – first up is “Oceana” a water themed video showing some great projections of sealife onto walls etc. I particularly like the killer whale video projection:

You can see that microvision have clearly been experimenting with the possible uses for thier new pico projector – and the laser pico is the ideal test subject. Next up is “Living window” a great little video of a pico projector held exactly at the right place for the projection to fill up a window. This sort of implementation is a great example for pico use and shows how a pico projector based advertising system might work:

Next up “Shopping for marine life” – a video showing the microvision microprojector being used to project a small aquarium like video onto the side of a white shopping bag being held by an unseen party – a hint towards a “minority report” style future where we could see every which surface the place of pico projector advertisements. I like how pico-projectors can make us re-evaluate how we see things – now the technology is being miniturised we can see openings for these new visual experiences.

Last up (this time) from picounderground is “the eagle has landed” a micro-projection experiment much like a lot of projector owners might have tried themselves – an eagle video is played through the show-w-x and then someones arm can be placed to make it look like the eagle is landing cleanly on said arm. Not an amazing example but it does make you think that things like cinema and green screen’s could also utilise pico technology in the future.

More look’s at these picounderground microvision video’s soon – digital video grafiti might just be moving miniture!

  2. I like the Safari experiments, it shows the fast laser switching technology (switching off the lasers for black)

yeah its all good with the laser projection – lets hope they make it to market/generation 2 in a timescale that promotes more development in laser pico technology

What do YOU think?
