Texas Instruments slimming its pico projector for mobile’s

Last week it was announced in Barcelona at the Mobile World Congress that Texas Instruments are working on even smaller pico projector DLP chips. The technology company (TXN) unveiled its latest digital light processor chip – smaller and slimmer and targetted solely at being embedded in mobile phones. Their latest DLP pico chip will enable near HD resolutions from mobile phone handsets!

Its certainly always interesting to watch the technology developments Texas Instruments (TXN) roll out – we love the fact they often sell the stuff as kits afterwards too like the DLP Projector Kit – TI’s manager of DLP Emerging Markets said “Our new nHD chipset for DLP pico projectors will enable even those thin flip phones to build in a projector,” – its great to hear the words HD and DLP pico projector in one sentance, even if it is near HD (its a nice step towards the realisation of full hd pico projector’s.)

Using TI’s MEMS system yet again within this DLP pico projector chip but smallifying the technology will allow the smaller form to still provide a resolution of 640×360 pixels, which is beyond excellent for something as small as to fit embedded within a slimline mobile phone. A screen size of up to 50inchs coupled with this good-for-slimline-phone resolution will make the Texas instruments mobile phone pico very likely to be included by some big mobile phone manufacturers.

Pico projector chips (dlp) from TI are already included in 3 mobile phones, including most recently the LG Expo but were not really compact enough to fit within slimmer phones. Hopefully this new chip will fill this gap and bring the pico projector module into many more mobile gadgets/phones. Seperate to mobiles there are now well over 10 technology manufacturers using licensed texas instruments DLP pico optics within their own pico projectors so you can see that TI has no problem bringing its embedded technology developments to market, perhaps if we do not see something for sale in the uk from Microvision (MVIS) soon then DLP will gain even more of a technology share of the pico market!
